What is an IP address?

An IP address is a unique identifier your device uses to talk to other systems on the internet. Web servers use it to know where to send responses back when you load a site or API.

IPv4 vs IPv6

IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses (e.g. 203.0.113.42). IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses (e.g. 2001:db8::1) and is designed to handle vastly more devices.

What it can reveal

IPs can reveal approximate location, ISP, and ASN, but not your exact name or street address.

Autonomous systems

An ASN identifies a network operated by an ISP, cloud provider, or organization. Routes on the internet are exchanged between ASNs.
